Celebrating the International Day of Older Persons

09/27/2025

Global Population Perspectives invites the scholarly community to mark the upcoming International Day of Older Persons on 1 October 2025. This annual observance, established by the United Nations, serves as a pivotal moment to reflect on the profound demographic shifts reshaping our world and to recognize the invaluable contributions of older persons.

Origins

The International Day of Older Persons was formally designated by the United Nations General Assembly on 14 December 1990. Its establishment was a direct outcome of global initiatives on aging, beginning with the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing adopted at the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing. The following year, the General Assembly further solidified the global commitment by endorsing the United Nations Principles for Older Persons in 1991, which outlined fundamental standards related to independence, participation, care, self-fulfillment, and dignity.

A key milestone was reached in 2002 with the adoption of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing at the Second World Assembly on Ageing.

2025 Theme

The theme for the 2025 commemoration, “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being and Our Rights”, builds upon the legacy of the Vienna and Madrid plans. It calls for a fundamental shift in perception: viewing older persons not as passive recipients of care but as active agents of change and indispensable partners in development.
