World Population Day 2025: Empowering Youth, Shaping Futures

11/03/2025

On July 11, the global community observes World Population Day, a pivotal moment established by the United Nations to spotlight demographic challenges and advance solutions for a sustainable future. Let's learn about World Population Day together.

Origins and Purpose

World Population Day traces its roots to July 11, 1987, when the global population reached five billion. In 1989, the UN designated this date as an annual call to action—highlighting the interplay between population dynamics, development, and human rights. Today, it mobilizes governments, researchers, and civil society to address issues from gender equality to resource equity.

2025 Theme

This year’s theme, “Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world,” calls for ensuring youth have the rights, tools, and opportunities to shape their futures. Today, the world counts 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24: the largest generation in history. They are facing economic insecurity, gender inequality, limited healthcare and education, climate disruption, and conflict.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasizes:

“They (young people) are not only shaping our future; they are demanding one that is just, inclusive, and sustainable.”

We call on all interested parties to actively participate in World Population Day 2025, including but not limited to participating in local or online events, supporting charities and initiatives, educating themselves, and spreading knowledge. In addition, in line with this year's theme, we warmly welcome submissions on topics such as fertility rates, youth empowerment, and gender equality.

We reaffirm: Demography is not destiny. By centering human rights, we forge paths to resilience and hope for all 8 billion of us.
