Focus and Scope

Psycho-Environmental Sustainability (PES) is an international, interdisciplinary, open-access academic journal that bridges psychology, environmental science, social sciences, and the humanities. We focus on the dynamic interplay between human psychology—cognition, emotion, motivation, and behavior—and environmental sustainability challenges. Our mission is to publish high-quality research that advances theoretical understanding while providing empirical foundations for policy-making, business practice, and community action, thereby fostering the transition toward a sustainable future.

The journal's core areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Environmental Psychology: environmental cognition, place attachment, and psychological drivers and barriers of pro-environmental behavior (e.g., energy conservation, water conservation, low-carbon transportation, recycling).
  • Conservation Psychology: biodiversity conservation, nature connectedness, and attitudes and behaviors toward wildlife and ecosystems.
  • Climate Psychology: climate change risk perception, climate anxiety and distress, coping strategies, and psychological mobilization for climate action.
  • Socio-ecological Psychology: systems thinking, understanding of complex environmental issues, and formation of collective action and social norms.
  • Behavioral Science and Policy: applications of nudging, choice architecture, and other behavioral interventions to promote sustainable consumption and lifestyles.
  • Sustainability and Well-being: relationships between sustainable lifestyles, subjective well-being, and life satisfaction.
  • Cross-cultural Environmental Psychology: comparative studies on environmental values, beliefs, and behaviors across diverse cultural, economic, and social contexts.
  • Environmental Communication and Education: effective communication of environmental messages to inspire concern and action, and psychological evaluation of environmental education programs.
